JOHN S. COWHIG was born in Mineola, New York in 1967.  He graduated from Southwestern University, School of Law (J.D., 1993).  He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1993.

Mr. Cowhig has been Certified as a Specialist in Family Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization since 1998.

Mr. Cowhig is the principal of The Law Offices of John S. Cowhig, APC, in Irvine, California, which dedicates its practice exclusively to handling Family Law litigation and mediation.  Mr. Cowhig has practiced exclusively in the field of Family Law since he was admitted to the California State Bar. 

Mr. Cowhig is a Fellow of the highly regarded and selective American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML)

Selected as “Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyer magazine starting in 2004.

Member of the Robert A. Banyard Inn of Court.

Mr. Cowhig is also a member of the following Associations:

American Bar Association (Member-Family Law section);

State Bar of California (Member, Family Law section);

Orange County Bar Association (Member, Family Law section, Trusts and Estates section, Sports, Entertainment and Marketing section, Hispanic Bar Association, and Celtic Bar Association); and

Mr. Cowhig has served on the Board of Directors of the Family Law Section of the Orange County Bar Association from 2003 – 2008 serving in the following capacities:

President (2008),

Vice President (2007),

Treasurer (2006),

Secretary (2005) and

Member At-large (2003-2004).

Mr. Cowhig has also served on the Board of Directors for the Orange County Bar Association from 2015 - 2017.

Mr. Cowhig is the present co-chair of the Education Committee of the Orange County Bar Association. 

He was also a member of the Education Committee of the Family Law Section from 1999 through 2008.

Mr. Cowhig is a graduate of the prestigious Family Law Trial Advocacy Institute as well as the Advance Family Law Trial Institute in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Cowhig is on the Board of Directors of Vocational Steps, a non-profit organization which prepares, instructs and guides adults with mild special needs in how to obtain employment while providing the support necessary to ensure their long term success.  Mr. Cowhig has dedicated numerous hours as a volunteer for the Legal Aid Society of Orange County and volunteers at Orangewood Children’s Home.
